Death Toll From Hurricane Ida Reaches 184 in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR - The death toll in El Salvador from the rains and flooding caused by Hurricane Ida last weekend has reached 184, local authorities said Friday.

Apart from the confirmed 184 deaths, 58 others remained missing, Civil Protection director Jorge Melendez said, adding that the number of homeless had also risen to more than 14,000.

Rains had affected five of the 14 departments in the country, causing landslides and flooding, Melendez added.

About 1,779 houses were seriously damaged, and another 220 were completely destroyed. Moreover, 24 bridges across the country were in urgent need of repair due to the effects of the hurricane.

The Salvadorian government has reinforced control at the temporary shelters to stop new outbreaks of dengue, malaria and A/H1N1 influenza.

Many nations and regional and world groups, including Cuba, Guatemala, Japan, Nicaragua, Mexico, the United States, Spain and Venezuela as well as the United Nations have offered humanitarian aid to the country.
