Guatemalan AG Says Former Top Cop Was Crime
Boss
GUATEMALA CITY – The disgraced former head
of Guatemala’s PNC national police led a
criminal gang that was in the business of
ripping off drug traffickers, Attorney
General Amilcar Velasquez said.
He told a press conference that
investigations into former PNC chief
Porfirio Perez, jailed since August, led to
arrest warrants for 10 other ex-cops and a
civilian implicated in the Aug. 6
disappearance of 119 kilos of cocaine
confiscated from smugglers.
Prosecutors have established that Perez, who
was named to run the PNC in June, led the
criminal organization involved in the drug
robberies, Velasquez said
Perez was arrested Aug. 28 for his alleged
role in the theft of $350,000 in drug-sale
proceeds seized during a police operation in
the western province of Chimaltenango.
Two other senior PNC officers were charged
along with Perez in the disappearance of the
119 kilos of cocaine, along with some of the
cops assigned as bodyguards for the top
brass.
Velasquez said prosecutors and detectives
working for his office relied on data from
the police cars’ GPS units and intercepts of
the conspirators’ cell phone conversations.
