Elections in Honduras to Deepen Crisis
TEGUCIGALPA - The elections in Honduras
under the conditions the coup created will
only deepen the political crisis, warned
Rasel Tome, an advisor of constitutional
President Manuel Zelaya.
Tome denounced the poll slated for November
29 will legitimize the rupture of democratic
order when the military toppled Zelaya last
June 28.
Talking to Prensa Latina on the phone from
the Brazilian Embassy where he's taking
shelter, he said the forces behind the coup
will ignore the electoral process.
Their stance -he pointed out- is not the
honorable position of candidates to deputies
and mayors who defend the restoration of
democracy in Honduras.
The Congress took more than a week to debate
an agreement to restore President Zelaya,
and its de facto Speaker Jose Saavedra said
Tuesday they did not know when the deputies
will be called to debate the issue again.
Saavedra the Supreme Court, the Public
Ministry, the General Prosecutor Office and
the Human Rights Commissioner who supports
the coup makers to assess the agreement
before any legislative move.
