Bridge Over River Tárcoles Finally Under
Construction
It took the death of five people and dozens
injured for the Ministerio de Obras Públicas
y Transportes (MOPT) to take action to
replace the suspension bridge over the
Tárcoles river between Turrubares and
Orotina.
The collapse of the bridge on October 22
when a loaded passenger bus plunged into the
river below brought to light the poor
condition of some 1.000 bridges, 10 of which
are classed as "critical", across the
country.
The irony in the October 22 accident is that
it could have been prevented if the MOPT has
acted responsibly and not marred down in red
tape, as it had the material to replace the
bridge in storage for some years.
Following the tragedy of over two weeks ago,
the MOPT has begun erecting the metal
structure bridge that should have been built
almost a decade ago, as the fallen bridge,
built more than 40 years ago, has been
lacking maintenance for at least two
decades.
The new structure spans about 80 metres
across the river.
Meanwhile area residents continue to use
boats to cross the river to move from one
side of the river to the other. The MOPT
says the Bailey type structure will be ready
by Thursday.
