At
Least 12 Dead, More Than 20,000 Affected by
Rains in Colombia
BOGOTA – At least 12 people have died and
more than 20,000 have been affected by the
heavy winter rains that began in late
September in Colombia, according to the
latest report by the Red Cross released
Sunday by several local media outlets.
The report says that 18 of the country’s 32
provinces have suffered damage from the
heavy rainfall, especially the southwestern
province of Cauca – where the situation is
critical in the municipality of Guapi – but
also in Huila, Choco, Tolima, Cordoba,
Santander and Norte de Santander.
The Red Cross reported that food and other
aid had been distributed to hundreds of
people who lost everything due to rains and
flooding in Guapi.
The state-run Hydrology, Meteorology and
Environmental Studies Institute, or Ideam,
forecasts that it will continue raining at
least until the middle of December, and the
rains will be especially intense along the
Pacific coast and in the northern part of
the country.
