Second Bridge Collapses!
It didn't take long for the second bridge to
fail under the stress of fatigue due to old
age and lack of maintenance, as the bridge
over the Rincón river, in Osa, gave way
under the weight of a giant crane crossing
the bridge on route to Puerto Jiménez.
Fortunately, in Friday's accident there were
no fatalities to report, as was the case on
October 22 when five people died
when a loaded passenger bus plunged into the
Tárcoles river between Turubares and Orotina.
According to authorities, the Rincón river
bridge could handle the load of the giant
crane and gave way under the enormous
weight.
This bridge, like 1.000 more lack more than
two decades of maintenance.
According to transport authorities the
Rincón river was built more than 20 years by
the US and has not received any maintenance
or repair since.
Following yesterday's accident, authorities
are now scrambling to reestablish passage on
the important road that connects Puerto
Jiménez to the Interamericana Sur.
For the time being, the only way to access
Puerto Jiménez is by water, as a large
number of vehicles, including delivery
vehicles, are trapped in Puerto Jiménez. |
