Heavy Rains Force Shut Down Of Important
Highway To Guápiles
Heavy rains forced the complete shut down of
Ruta 32, the highway to Guápiles shortly
after 5pm on Monday, as passage on the
highway was blocked due to landslides at
various points, mainly at kilometres 18 and
51.
The highway was closed by the Policía de
Tránsito to avoid a tragedy and for work
crews to start the clean, partially
re-opening only lane shortly before 10pm.
The highway is the only viable route between
San José and Guápiles that leads to
Sarapiquí and Limón. The only alternate
route open is through Cartago and Turrialba
that exits at Siquirres, but that route is
not recommended, as it is narrow and winds
through the mountains, making travel
dangerous especially at night.
The other alternate, Heredia to Sarapiquí by
way of Vara Blanca and Cinchona is still
completely closed following the destruction
of the earthquake of January 8 this year and
even though the government has spend more
than ¢8 billion colones in road and bridge
repair.
The director of the Policía de Tránsito
confirmed last night the complete and
partial closures and that his officials are
on site to regulate traffic.
