Clinton Calls Arias To Congratulate Him On Honduras Accord

The US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, personally called by telephone Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias, to congratulate him for his efforts and key role in the Honduran political agreement that will restore peace to the Central American country.

When Honduran president Manuel Zelaya was ousted from office in a coup d'etat on June 28, he landed on the doorsteps of Arias, who immediately sprung into action, laying out a proposal for the restoration of peace in that country.

The proposal failed to bring a quick agreement to the political crisis in Honduras and failed to bring the two leaders, de facto leader Roberto Micheletti and ousted Zelaya, face to face at his private home in Rohrmoser.

But, it was the main body of that agreement that was used last week by Assistant Secretary of State, Robert Shannon, to push for a signature to an agreement that was finally signed on Friday.

"Secretary Hilary Clinton called me to congratulate me on the Acuerdo de San José, however, I told her there is still much to be done. It will now be up to the political parties (of that country) to implement the the Plan", said Arias on Sunday.

Arias, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, added that Clinton thanked him for his important role in bringing peace to Honduras which is a direct result of the Acuerdo de San José.

Arais said that he is not sure if there is the political will in Honduras to restore Zelaya.

"I had proposed that all went back to as it was on June 27th, before the coup d'etat", said Arias.

The outcome of the agreement in Honduras is not up to that country's legislature to restore Zelaya to power or step backwards.

Arias said he did not know the date and if Zelaya will be restored to power, but will accept the invitation to attend the reinstatement ceremony, if invited.

"We planted the first seed", said Arias, who never imagined that it would take four months to get where they are today.
