Chinchilla Ahead of Araya For PLN
Leadership
The Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN)
leadership race is coming to close with a
convention set for Sunday, June 7, when
party members will decide who will lead them
into the 2010 presidential elections, Laura
Chinchilla, Johnny Araya or Fernando
Berrocal.
The latest Unimer poll of decided voters
puts Chinchilla 11 percentage points ahead
of Araya.
The poll indicates that the former
vice-president has the support of 45 out of
every 100 voters, while the former San Jose
mayor only 34 out of 100.
The difference is significant as Araya has
led Chinchilla in most of the polls of the
recent months.
The margin of error on the poll is 3.9
points up and down.
For the third candidate, the former ministro
de seguridad, Fernando Berocal, his support
is only 2 out of 100. If the margin of error
is applied to Berrocal's candidacy, there is
none.
The poll also reveals that 26% of voters
have made the decision to attend the
national convention. According to the
Tribunal Supremo de Elecciones (TSE)
electoral list a 26% show would mean about
700.000 voters taking part in the June 7
convention.
The Unimer poll also reveals that
Chinchilla's greatest support is from women,
with 56 out of every 100 women supporting
Laura, while only 37 for Johnny.
Age is also an important factor in the
results. 58% of the voters for Chinchilla
are between 18 and 29 years of age, while
Araya captured only 36% of that segment. In
the 30 to 29 age group, Chinchilla got a 51%
to Araya's 33%.
