Condos To
Replace Hatillo Slums
With an investment of ˘2.4 billion colones,
the government hopes rid the slums of 25 de
Julio, in Hatillo.
The objective of the plan is for people to
leave their shacks made of wood and tin, to
live in a condominium complex that offers
them a better quality of life.
The money will be invested repair 33 homes
and build 186 new, 169 which will be in
buildings of two to four stories.
In an official ceremony, Costa Rican
president, Oscar Arias, placed the first
stone in what is being called a new chapter
in the lives of many who have been waiting
patiently for decades after the creation of
the first slum in the area known as "AguantaFilo".
The ministra de Vivienda (Housing ministe),
Clara Zomer, said the program is to provide
those living in squalor conditions a new
chance in life, to rise above the poverty.
As part the program the municipality of San
Jose will be building or repairing roads,
sidewalks, playgrounds and green areas,
investing ˘700 million colones in the
project, which will be financed by the Bono
Comunal program.
Zomer added that part of the process is to
educate people how to live in condominiums,
teaching residents how to get along with
their neighbours and share resources.
