Nicaragua Liberals Hinder Legislative Work

Managua -  Liberals within the Nicaraguan National Assembly are insisting on hindering the work of the current legislative period, according to experts.

After the honeymoon period between liberals and Sandinista Front members, during which the government put forward important social programs in the legislature, the situation changed in mid 2008, and a day in which there is quorum has become something unusual.

Political analysts, as historian Aldo Diaz Lacayo, believe that the opposition is agitated, due to the progress made by the government with its programs.

The issue of fraud in the municipal elections is a well-tried argument, used by the opposition to hinder the legislators' work, parliamentary sources said.

However, another technique came to light the past week at the hall where those called fathers of the homeland meet.

National Assembly chair, Sandinista Front member Rene Nuñez was not able to summon the session to approve the board of directors of the Produzcamos Bank, which should grant around $50 million to the medium and small producers in the next agricultural cycle.

Liberals took a group of Managua's carnival to the hall, causing that the assembly members scattered.

Thus, the Assembly leadership expects to call its members to another meeting. If it is held or not would depend on the liberals' willingness to have quorum, which is achieved with 47 of 92 parliament members.
