The number of "suspected" cases of the H1N1
or swine flu reached 501, according to the
Ministerio de Salud, with 389 have bee

Of the 501 cases of suspected H1N1 infection
that have been reported since April 24, 112
remain in quarantine and under observation,
awaiting the test results to determine if
they are positively infected or not.
So far only one person has been confirmed by
the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in
Atlanta, of being infected, while 8 more are
listed as "probable", meaning they have been
confirmed by local health officials, but are
waiting full confirmation by the CDC.
Costa Rica was to have received this week a
testing kit from the CDC to perform the
confirmation testing locally, speeding up
the process by eliminating the long wait for
the results from the inundated CDC.
Salud officials
say that the majority of the cases has been
recorded in the age group between 20 and 29,
followed by those between 30 and 39. The
ministerio de Salud numbers indicate that
more men are affected by the flu than women.
In a statement to the press, the ministra de
Salud, María Luisa Ávila, said that the H1N1
in Costa Rica has been contained to those
who have visited or have come into contact
with someone who has visited Mexico.
Rosa Climent, medical chief of the Caja
Costarricene de Seguro Social (CCSS), said
that a sweeping of areas where suspected
cases have been reported is continuing,
especially in the areas of Heredia, Moravia
and Coronado, in San José.
Those suspected of being infected are being
asked to stay home for between 7 and 10
days.
Xiomara Badilla, epimologist for the CCSS,
explained that their work is being made
difficult by people are suspected of being
infected and who don't understand the
contagiousness of the virus and do not
understand that they should stay indoors.
Climent added that some 79 people, 49 of
which are staff at the Calderon Guardia
hospital, have been given preventive
treatement as they came into contact with
the "probables".
In all the majority of the suspected cases,
the symptoms have been light, with only two
people having to be confined to hospital, a
young girl with asthmatic problems and a 53
year old man with pneumonia and is diabetic.
