Arias Will
Speak On The Economy During His Annual
Report Speech For May 1
As customary for May 1, Labour Day, the
president provides an account of his actions
during the past year. This is the third
report by Arias during his second term, and
as well as his last.
The president is expected, during his speech
to the Legislative Assembly this afternoon,
about the state of the economy, education,
health and infrastructure. The Plan Escudo,
the government's policy to combat the
economic crisis, will be an important part
of his account.
President Arias said yesterday that he will
devote a special paragraph on Limón in his
speech and that Costa Ricans should not
judge a government for the things it does,
but for the things it avoids from happening.
Arias assures, and something to be the focus
of his speech, that Costa Rica is better
prepared that other Latin American countries
to deal with the economic crisis.
However, the president is being real, saying
that 2010 will also be a difficult year,
following increased unemployement and no
growth for the remainder of this year.
The prez promised that, during the last year
of his term, he will make social programs a
priority. "In the area of infrastructure, we
will complete a number of public works and
start new ones", said Arias to the press the
day before he makes his annual report.
We'll follow his progress while he's down
there. And we'll also file a report upon his
return.
