Costa Rica Unions Target Government On May Day

Costa Rican union groups are preparing "The Great March" of May 1 to reject the government's financial crisis plan, the "Plan Escudo" (Shield Plan), the Free Trade Treaty with the United States and impunity for the corrupt.

One of the coordinators of the march, Javier Quintero, explained that the main theme will be opposition to the Plan Escudo approved by Costa Rican president Oscar Arias to allegedly confront the economic crisis which, in fact, has worsened the situation for the most vulnerable.

Costa Ricans, said Quintero, should take to the streets and demonstrate their opposition to the fierce persecution of union leaders, the Free Trade Treaty and impunity of the corrupt.

Among the worker's movement objectives the leader also included the fight against sexual exploitation, child labour, violation of the Constitution and human rights and the sale of state companies.

According to the general secretary of the Confederación Costarricense de Trabajadores Democráticos (Costa Rican Democratic Confederation of Workers) (CCTD, Maria Rodriguez, the government's Plan Escudo  is to socialize losses and pass responsibility of the financial crisis to the workers.

They cannot impose socializing losses for what a small group did and wants to protect, explained the CCTD representative.

We are against a savage capitalism that has only increased corruption and de-regulation of the work day, she explained.

There may be many reasons to hold the traditional march on International Worker's Day.

Quintero mentioned some that must equally oppose the financial and currency policy of the Banco Central (Central Bank) that places the country on the road to inflation, a scourge of popular sectors.

Union members will also express their opposition to a policy of appeasement and control of the energy field, the Labor Flexibility Project, social insecurity related to work, health, housing, education and culture for the well being of the homeland.

May 1 must be a day to promote a political battle, summarized one of the representatives of the Asociación Nacional de Educadores(ANDE) - National Association of Educators  - Jose Antonio Barquero.
