Emergency Commission Boss Quits
The president of the Comisión Nacional de
Emergencias (CNE) - national emergency
commission, Daniel Gallardo, resigned his
post on Wednesday, citing health and
personal reasons for his stepping down.
The resignation is effective as of April 13,
allowing the government to find a
replacement.
Gallardo said his doctors have advised him
to rest.
Both Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias and
his brother, the ministro de la Presidencia,
Rodrigo Arias, praised Gallardo and his work
at the CNE.
The CNE is the front line resource for those
affected by national and man made disasters.
However, it has come under fire from various
sectors, both public and private, for its handling
(or mis-handling) of the Cinchona
earthquake relief efforts.
The earthquake registering 6.3 on the
Richter Scale hit on January 8, 2009,
leaving 19 deaths and thousands homeless.
Hundreds are still living in shelters and
rebuilding of the area has been very slow. |
