Taxi Fares Dropping Next
Week
Taxi fares will be a little cheaper beginning next week when the
approved fare drop of ¢40 colones for the first kilometre and ¢45
for each additional kilometre takes effect. The rate drop was
approved yesterday by the Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios
Públicos (Aresep).
According to the Arespe review of taxi fares, the regulator took
into account the variable costs such as fuel, salaries and the
exchange rate.
The new fares will take effect on March 10.
Without a question the drop in fares was not welcomed by the "fuerza
roja" (red force), as the taxis are often referred to as, saying
that the regulator did not take into account other maintenance costs
such as change of tires, oil, filters, etc, that all vehicles
require.
Maikol Sossa, general manager of the Federación Nacional de
Cooperativas de Taxi (taxi union) said that the figures used by the
regulator was way out of line and based on 2005 figures, the last
time costs were updated by the Aresep.
Sossa said the taxis are just asking that the rates stay as they
are, adding that if the costs were updated the actual first
kilometre should be set at ¢500 colones.
