Costa Rica To
Reach 5.5 Million Cellular Phone Users by
2014
Costa Rica will top 5.5 million mobile
cellular phone users by 2014, according to a
report by Signals Telecom Consulting.
According to Elias Vicente, Signals Telecom
senior analyst and study author, Costa Rican
telecommunications operator Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) has made
significant progress, such as the deployment
of an exclusive site for content-based
value-added services, in addition to its
announced plans of prepay and 3G (UMTS /
HSPA) service deployments.
However, ICE still lacks important
implementations, including the deployment of
a unique brand for mobile services, the
analyst said.
Telecoms operators Cable & Wireless, Digicel,
Movistar, Tigo and Claro have already
announced plans to enter the Costa Rican
mobile market.
The entry of new operators on the local
mobile market is expected to boost video
services and service bundles.
Last week the Superintendencia de
Telecomunicaciones (Sutel) approved six ISP
operators to compete with ICE and is
expected to announce the approval of three
or more cellular phone operators by the end
of the year, who are expected to begin
operations by mid 2010.
