Panamanian President-elect on
International Tour
Panama - Panamanian President-elect Ricardo Martinelli is on an international tour that
will take him to Colombia and Brazil before
taking office, official sources said.
Spokespersons for the new government pointed
out that Martinelli and Vice President-elect
Juan Carlos Varela traveled to the Dominican
Republic on Friday, where they meet with
President Leonel Fernandez. On Monday, they
will arrive in Colombia, where they will
meet with President Alvaro Uribe.
On Wednesday, they will meet with President
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brazil.
The sources added that the first meeting of
Council of the Cabinet during the 2009-2014
term would be held in a rural community to
discuss some of the topics Martinelli
promoted during the election campaign.
The issues include a 100-dollar bonus for
people over 70 years of age who have no
pension, a pay raise for public servants,
the high cost of living and the subway
project.
