Digicel Targets Mobile Telecom License in Costa Rica

Caribbean mobile operator Digicel plans to launch mobile operations in Costa Rica in 2010, when the local government will award mobile services licenses to three operators.

According to Hannia Vega, Costa Rica telecommunications vice-minister, the tender will be launched in September, with the first mobile license to be awarded between March and April 2010.

Costa Rica "is an ideal market for us [...] we plan to invest heavily in the future to develop a first-class network", said, Colm Delves, Digicel group CEO.

Delves also said that finding money to invest should not be a problem for Digicel.

"We are well capitalized, but I am confident that we can raise cash if needed, particularly in a place like Costa Rica", he added.

Digicel recently launched mobile operations in Honduras at mid-November and Panama in December 2008. The operator hopes to reach a market share of at least 30 percent in Honduras and Panama over the next two years.
