Blind Legislator Sets Sights On Presidency
in 2010
With the slogan “Con alma de lucha" (With
the soul of struggle) Oscar López wants to
be the first handicapped president of Costa
Rica, not letting his lack of vision blind
him from leading the country.
López, legislator for the Partido
Accesibilidad sin Exclusion (PASE) -
Accessibility without Exclusion Party, a
party he helped create, says he is ready for
2010 and has worked towards creating a
national party that first surfaced on the
political scene in 2006.
The legislator has been blind since birth
and says he has the experience to face many
of the problems facing Costa Rica,
especially in terms of poverty, crime and
the current financial crisis.
In a press conference on Tuesday, López
presented a draft of 130 proposals that seek
to improve the rights of the handicapped,
youth and elders in the country.
López defines the PASE as a group of
humanist ideology, which places the person
first. Yesterday, he criticized the
candidates of other political parties, whom
he accuses of failing to respect this
principle.
The legislator says that even if he not
successful in winning the presidency,
legislators representing the PASE elected
will continue the movement.
"I appeal to social sectors and the
population to not believe in any party or
any politician. Now they have whom to vote
for. We come to refresh the national
politics and to break the pattern of
governance that has crippled the country for
over 30 years", said López.
López is the fourth candidate to announce
presidential aspirations.
Last week, Laura Chinchilla of the PLN party
was chosen as their candidate, the week
earlier the PAC reconfirmed the candidacy of
Ottón Solís and the PUSC party is expected
to be led by Rafael Ángel Calderón. |
