Volcano Erupts Again
In Southwestern Colombia
Bogota - Galeras Volcano in southwestern Colombia
erupted again early Monday morning, emitting ashes
down to the nearby city of Pasto, officials said.
The eruption occurred at 6:38 a.m. local time (1138
GMT) Monday morning, said Lina Dorado, director of
the Narino Department Emergency Committee.
So far, there have been no reports of casualties or
material damage.
The 4,276-meter-high volcano erupted mildly on
Sunday morning, which had forced the evacuation of
about 8,000 people living nearby.
The national Geology and Mining Institute declared a
red alert following the first eruption, meaning
another one is under way.
Martha Calvache, director of the institute, said
that the volcano could be calm for several days, but
she warned that it could reactivate, to which she
said people should pay close attention.
Colombia has 38 volcanoes, 15 of which are active.
After a long period of dormancy, Galeras became
active in 1988, and erupted in the early 1990s, 2004
and 2006. The most serious one was in 1993, which
killed nine people.
