Autopista Próspero Fernández Dubbed "The Highway For The Rich"

That is the new name for the autopista Próspero Fernández now that the Escazu toll station is operational, as many drivers have decided to avoid the ˘310 colones toll (each way) and use the alternate routes.

Many drivers are refusing to pay the toll that is being called a "robo" (theft) for basically the same highway that once cost only a ˘75 toll and only for westbound traffic.

In addition, drivers of minivans are finding another surprise, toll station attendants are qualifying some minivans as more than a "liviano" (small vehicle) and are asking drivers to hand over a the higher toll of ˘630 that is used for buses .

The net effect of the high tolls is that traffic is spilling on the only alternate route to Escazu and Santa Ana, a road that has been congested for some time now.

Some Minivans are being asked to pay the higher toll of 630 colones.
