Ecuador to Join ALBA June 24
Quito - Ecuador will officially become a
full member of the Bolivarian Alternative for the
Peoples of Our America (ALBA) during the special
summit of this organization, to be run June 24 in
Venezuela.
The Ecuadorian President announced this news in the
canton Gualaquiza, south of Morona Santiago
province.
Correa, who will ratify this decision Saturday,
stated that the entrance to this integrationist
group will benefit the country, as it will defend in
bloc common political positions in international
forums.
The aim of this organization, comprised of Bolivia,
Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominica, Cuba, Saint Vincent
and the Grenadines, and Venezuela, is to have a
common fund of investments, and Ecuador also expects
to join the Unique System for Regional Equalization,
the statesman pointed out.
Correa made this statements shortly after Venezuelan
President Hugo Chavez announced some days ago
Ecuador's entrance to the ALBA.
Created in 2004 by Chavez and the then Cuban
President Fidel Castro, this organization emerged as
an alternative of integration in comparison to the
proposal of the US-boosted Free Trade Area of the
Americas. |
