Colombia, US Accord Irks Population
Bogota - Colombians frustrated with a suspicious
agreement that gives the possibility to US military
presence in Apiay, Malambo and Palanquero military
bases.
Radio Caracol says Liberal Party spokesman, Sen.
Juan Manuel Galan, announced a party debate on July
20 with the interior, defense and foreign ministers
on the scope of the accord.
Although the agreement does not include setting up
US basis, Galan regretted Congressional exclusion
from the talks that approved a 10-year presence of
800 troops plus 600 contractors.
The agreement that facilitate US military operations
in Colombia may include another two bases and
replace US operations in Manta, Ecuador, whose
contract expires this month. |
