UN Rapporteur in Guatemala

Guatemala - Leandro Depouy, UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers, is starting a visit to Guatemala on Friday, the third this year as an observer of the justice system.

Despouy visited this capital in January, when he recommended urgent reforms to the sector to fight impunity, and he began to monitor it later, in May.

He will verify now the process to select the new judges of the Supreme Court of Justice and the Court of Appeals, according to a press release by the United Nations representative to this capital.

He has planned to meet with officials of the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary, as well as of social and international community organizations.

In the five days of his visit, Despuoy will also hold meetings with Nomination Commission members, who will select candidates for judges of both courts.
