Colombia Scandal Witnesses Summoned
Bogota - The Colombian Prosecutors Office summoned
150 witnesses Thursday, to give testimony on the
scandal on the illegal interceptions made by the
Department of Security (DAS) to magistrates,
politicians and opposition leaders.
A report by local radio station Radio Caracol said
Thursday the requests were already sent, including
to several members of the Colombian Supreme Court of
Justice, to give testimony on how they were victims
of illegal espionage.
Among the people to give their testimony are former
Colombian presidential candidate Alvaro Leyva,
Governor of Nariño Antonio Navarro; Carlos Gaviria
and Gustavo Petro, presidential pre-candidates in
representation of local political organization Polo
Democratico Alternativo and Liberal Senator Piedad
Cordoba.
The Prosecutor Office is investigating four former
DAS directors and will hear statements made by
representatives from several non-governmental
organizations, also victims of illegal espionage.
The Colombian society demands the truth, and
recently Colombian State Council president Rafael
Lafont said the high court magistrates are scared
because of the new revelations on the illegal
interceptions.
The State Council regarded the measures adopted as
inefficient to avoid similar cases in the future.
The Prosecutor Office accused DAS subdirector Jose
Miguel Narvaez because of his possible
responsibility in illegal communication, use of
transmitters and receptors and falsifying of
documents. |
