CRISIS IN HONDURAS
Latin American Lawmakers Draft Honduras Text
Quito - Representatives from
Latin American parliaments are to approve
Thursday in this capital the final
declaration of a special meeting to evaluate
the political crisis in Honduras and
possible consequences for the region.
The event, started Wednesday after the
speech by some Latin American legislators,
is to conclude today with the signing of a
document condemning the brutal coup d'Etat
in that Central American nation.
Leaders from Argentina, Bolivia, Mexico,
Chile, Venezuela, Cuba, and Ecuador were
concerned about the political situation
gripping that country, and lamented the
support of that nation's Congress.
Fernando Cordero, chairman of the Ecuadorian
Legislative Commission, questioned the
position adopted by the de facto authorities
in Honduras, created after the coup, which
ignore demands from international
organizations.
Cordero called his colleagues to examine the
situation and discuss actions, as what
happened in the Central American country is
a threat for the peaceful democratic
processes registered in the region.
Ramon Pez Ferro, president of the
International Relations Commission of the
Cuban Parliament, said it energetically
refuted the coup d'Etat in that nation.
The Peoples' Power National Assembly
(Parliament) of Cuba issued a vigorous
declaration some days ago, which says the
coup d'Etat against Honduran President
Manuel Zelaya sets back the democratization
process started in the region 30 years ago.
Pez Ferro called Latin American and
international parliamentarians, as well as
legislative organizations to repudiate
Honduras soldiers' brutal behaviour, and
demanded that Zelaya return to his post
unconditionally.
