Costa Rica
Facing A Rice Shortage
Costa Rica is almost out of enough rice to
satisfy the demand and as such the
government has issued a decree fro the
purchase of 45.000 metric tons for the next
year.
The decree was published in the official
government publication, La Gaceta, which
explains the shortage situation and lower
import duties.
In difference to the growth during the past
year, the Northern Zone will present a
contraction in the number of hectares of
rice planted during the current period.
According to the Corporación Arrocera
Nacional (National Rice Corporation) it
expects a production deficit of 32.000
metric tons, which means a significant
reliance on imports.
