CRISIS IN HONDURAS
Honduras' Zelaya
Arrives
in Panama Representing Nation
Panama - Honduras'
President Manuel Zelaya, who was forced into
exile by a Sunday military coup in his
country, arrived in Panama on Wednesday to
take part in the swearing in ceremony of
Panama's new president, Ricardo Martinelli.
Zelaya arrived on a plane from U.S. capital
Washington and is continuing to represent
his nation in official events, following
widespread international backing. He was
accompanied by Patricia Rodas, his
government's foreign minister, and her
Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro.
Upon arrival he repeated the agreements made
with the Organization of American States
(OAS) at its Washington headquarters. The
OAS had given the post-coup government 72
hours to reinstate him, or face expulsion
from the body. As part of the same decision,
Zelaya will postpone his return to Honduras
72 hours to the weekend, instead of
Thursday, as originally planned.
Martinelli is also hosting presidents Alvaro
Uribe, of neighboring Colombia; Leonel
Fernandez, of the Dominican Republic; Felipe
Calderon, of Mexico; and Oscar Arias of
Costa Rica.
