CRISIS IN HONDURAS
Honduras' Supreme
Court Orders Arrest of Pro-Zelaya Mayor
Tegucigalpa -
Honduras' Supreme Court has issued an order
to arrest Rodolfo Padilla Sunsery, mayor of
the country's second largest city of San
Pedro Sula, while dismissing him from the
post, the Interior Ministry confirmed on
Tuesday.
An arrest order was made allegedly for the
mayor's involvement in forging documents and
embezzling public money, the Interior
Ministry Spokesman Elvin Guzman said.
The order has been sent to the military,
Guzman added.
Padilla Sunsery was one of the staunchest
supporters of the deposed President Manuel
Zelaya.
On Tuesday, thousands of demonstrators took
to the streets in San Pedro Sula, some 250
km north of the capital Tegucigalpa,
condemning the interim president Roberto
Micheletti for cheating the public and
urging to reinstate Zelaya.
Early Sunday, Zelaya was snatched from his
bed in the Presidential Palace by hooded and
heavily armed troops and forced to board a
plane bound for Costa Rica.
Later on Sunday, Honduras' Congress
appointed Micheletti as the interim
president in a session that began with the
reading of a resignation letter, purportedly
from Zelaya who has denied signing it.
