More Aid Requested for
Colombia Flood Vctims
Bogota - Disaster-relief workers in
Colombia on Wednesday asked for more humanitarian aid for some
32,000 victims of the recent flooding.
The first consignment of 14 tons of aid from Venezuela has been
distributed to 32 regional offices in the affected south region, and
more aid is needed for the victims, Carlos Marquez, director for
rescue of the Red Cross of Colombia, said.
"The resources we are requesting are food and medicines to feed the
people and prevent diseases among the victims, who are in shelters
at present," Marquez said.
He said blankets and mattresses are also badly needed, adding that
donations by civilians and international organizations are important
to relieve the situation.
The overflowing Mira and Patia rivers in Narino department in the
past few days have destroyed farmlands, roads and houses, killed
animals, and displaced many people, most of them peasants. |
