Estado Nacional More Than Half Complete
Amid a spectacular fireworks display, the
Chinese workers construction the new Estado
Nacional (National Stadium) celebrate the
symbolic handover concrete sports building
to Osvaldo Pandolfo, vice-minister of
Sports.
Pandolfo explained that the act is part of
the compliance of the construction company,
as the work on the new stadium is moving
quickly, estimated at more than half
complete.
The vice-minister said the ceremony was to
give Costa Ricans their gift for the new
year.
Construction on the new stadium began nine
months ago, as the contractor, Anhui Foreign
Economic Construction (AFEC), has until
February 2011 to officially hand over the
project to the government of Costa Rica.
Last September, Costa Rican president Oscar
Arias had asked the builder if at all
possible to have the sports complex ready
for May 2010, for the transfer of government
ceremonies.
The stadium is rising quickly out of the
dust of the old stadium located at the
northwest corner of the Sabana park, that
was torn down to make way for the new. AFEC
says that it expects to raise the roof of
the stadium in the next two months.
The stadium is being built and paid for the
government of China as gift to Costa Rica
after the Arias government resumed
diplomatic relations with China in favour of
Taiwan.
Some 600 Chinese nationals have been working
on the stadium around the clock to build the
stadium that will seat 35.000 sports fans.
