Panama to Spend Millions to Face El Niño
PANAMA - The Panamanian government expects
to spend millions of dollars to face El Niño
climatological phenomenon, which threatens
to become stronger in the first months of
2010.
Measures to create additional capacities for
electricity generation, reserves for cattle
food, and water supply alternatives are part
of the choices the government is dealing
with.
Estimated expenses amount to 120 million
dollars, and of them, 55 millions will be
used to hire Aggreko International Company
for electricity generation.
Meanwhile, the National Aqueduct and Drains
Institute (IDAAN) will be assigned some 16
million dollars to fund several contingency
measures, including the drilling of 79 wells
nationwide.
Equipments of waterworks plants will be
improved, and cistern trucks and vessels
will supply water in certain areas.
The strategy also involves agriculture,
taking into consideration the affectations
El Niño could cause to crops and cattle. |
