Early Morning Emergency At The Juan
Santamaría
The morning calm of the Juan Santamaría (San
José) international airport was broken with
the sounds of the sirens of the dozen
ambulances and half dozen fire trucks
rushing to the cargo terminal of the
airport, when the Continental jetliner that
had minutes before taken off from the
Santamaría, announced its return to port.
The pilots of the airliner with 108
passengers on board detected a problem with
the motors about 30 minutes into the flight,
near the Nicaraguan border, headed for
Houston.
The airplane was returned to the San José
airport that was met by emergency personnel
who were not aware of the exact nature of
the emergency.
The Boeing 737-800 was checked over and
grown crews found no problems.
The emergency began about 8:30am. BY 8:55am
the airplane was back on its way to its
destination.
In total some 40 fire fighters from
Alajuela, Heredia and San José were
dispatched to assist the fire fighters based
at the airport. Paramedics and ambulances
stood at the ready when the airplane landed.
