Fares Up
As of yesterday taxi fares are more
expensive with the implementation of the
latest increase approved by the Autoridad
Reguladora de Servicios Públicos (Aresep).
The first kilometre now costs ¢510 colones
(up from ¢455) - a ¢55 colones increase,
while the additoinal kilometres is now ¢510
from ¢415, a ¢95 increase.
The Aresep approved the new rates on
December 18 following a request by the
Federación Nacional de Cooperativas de Taxi
(Fenacotaxi), explaining that the "feurza
roja" has had to face increases in the cost
of gasoline, repairs, insurance and
circulation permit, among others.
Fencostaxi had asked for a 35% increase in
fares, however, the Aresep approved a hike
of only a 24%.
The rates apply to all taxis that are
required to use the "maria" (meter) for all
fares, no matter the distance travelled and
the time of day.
The taxis in Costa Rica are known as the "feurza
roja" (red force) for their colour red and
working united as one unit.
