Costa Rican Pineapple Growers Expect
Recovery In 2010
The pineapple industry in Costa Rica expects
to open markets in the US west coast during
2010 to recover the current stagnating
harvesting Figures show that at the end of
2009, the value of Costa Rican pineapple
exports will fall about 1% compared to 2008.
In the first 10 months of this year, Costa
Rica exported pineapple worth us$ 478
million to some 30 different countries,
according to the Promotora del Comercio
Exterior de Costa Rica (Procomer) - Foreign
Trade Corporation.
That figure is slightly below the $483
million sold in the first 10 months of 2008.
The Cámara Nacional de Productores y
Exportadores de Piña (CANAPEP) - National
Chamber of Producers and Exporters of
Pineapple - has high hopes for a strong
recovery in demand in the west coast of the
United States in 2010.
In addition, the industry expects to
increase sales by opening new markets. Among
them was able to open, in 2009-at a crisis,
those of Turkey and Iraq.
This combination of factors, plus strong
sales in the European market will rebound in
a recovery next year, according to estimates
by CANAPEP.
Pineapple will close this year as the second
agricultural product and a third of total
exports for foreign exchange earnings.
CANAPEP estimated that there are currently
about 1,300 pineapple growers nationwide.
The younger cultivations are especially at
the northern and Caribbean, where there was
a large expansion in recent years. There are
also in the southern part. |
