Bomberos Ask That Other Emergency Vehicles
Be Included In Free Toll Pass
The head of the Bomberos de Costa Rica (Fire
Department), Héctor Chaves, is asking the
concessionaire of the autopista Fernando
Próspero to include other emergency and
support vehicles in the free pass across the
Escazú tolls.
The Sala Cuarta (Constitutional Court) ruled
earlier this month on an appeal by the
Bomberos when fire trucks and support
vehicles were being forced to stop to pay
the tolls, including while on a emergency
call.
Autopistas del Sol, the consortium than
manages the road from San José to Caldera,
has responded to the court decision, but is
only applying to the vehicles of the
Bomberos.
According to Chaves, ambulances, police and
including the traffic police that patrol the
highway, have to stop to fill out a form
every time and for every vehicle that cross
the toll station, regardless if the vehicle
is on a routine patrol or responding to an
emergency.
Chaves stresses that the support vehicles
and the equipment and personnel they carry
are are vital to saving lives.
