High Abstention Confirmed Honduran Electoral Court

TEGUCIGALPA - Figures from the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) released on Tuesday confirm a high abstentionism in elections held under the de facto regime in Honduras on November 29.

According to TSE, the total number of votes, including valid, blank and void, reached 2.30 million of an electoral roll of 4.60 million, which reflects an abstentionism of 50 percent.

The National Front against the Coup, with delegates in all departments, said that the index of absence reached 60-70 percent, the highest in the history of the country.

They add to threats from business people to workers to go to the polls, denunciations of alterations in electoral suitcases, manipulation of figures and other irregularities.

Over 100 impugnations were filed by candidates to posts of popular election. However, TSE authorities said they have been settled, while others were rejected for lack of legal weight, Tiempo daily denounced.

The Supreme Electoral Court, which backed the coup of June 28 against President Manuel Zelaya, gave the triumph to Porfirio Lobo, a candidate of the National Party, with 56.5 percent of the votes, followed by Elvin Santos, from the Liberal Party, with 38 percent.

These elections were rejected by most Latin American countries, which considered them unlawful as they were sponsored by the same authors of the coup and were not internationally verified.

Meanwhile, the National Front against the Coup, grouping unions, indigenous and rural organizations, as well as progressive politicians and representatives of other sectors has called a national protest for inauguration day, on January 27.
