Panama March Marks 20th Anniversary Of US
Invasion
(Associated Press) About 100 people have
staged a protest outside the former U.S.
Embassy building in Panama City on the 20th
anniversary of the 1989 invasion that
toppled dictator Manuel Noriega.
The demonstrators are demanding more
information about Panamanians who died
during the invasion, saying the true number
of victims remains unknown. Officials put
the toll at up to 500, while rights groups
estimate more than 1,000 were killed.
Sunday's protest partially blocked traffic.
Noriega served a U.S. sentence for drug
trafficking and other crimes, but remains in
custody while fighting extradition to France
to face money laundering charges.
