Guatemala Lagging in Job Creation
GUATEMALA - The generation of jobs in
Guatemala is currently insufficient to
compensate losses in that country, where
nearly 116,000 people were laid off in a
year.
According to a poll by the Association of
Social Studies and Investigation (ASIES),
from October 2008 to October 2009, a total
of 115,909 people lost their jobs.
In that period, 86,222 Guatemalans were able
to get a job, but another 29,687 jobs are
still needed.
The survey reveals a downward trend in job
generation, and notes that 78 percent of
employers polled in 878 workplaces said it
is likely they will hire no new workers in
the coming six months.
An ASIES expert quoted by Prensa Libre daily
stated that one in every ten entities polled
November 3-23 cut wages.
The sectors with the highest number of
workers dismissed were industrial, with
18,773; services, with 8,526; and trade,
6,931.
