Canada's Governor General Ends Official
Visit To Costa Rica
On the final day of the State visit to
Costa Rica, Canada's Governor General,
Michaelle Jean, toured revitalization
projects in two San José neighbourhoods. The
projects are managed by the Fundación Costa
Rica-Canada.
The Governor General toured the Los Guido
neighbourhood to meet with representatives
of the foundation, and to recognize the
remarkable work they have been doing for
over 20 years, providing sustainable housing
to the most disadvantaged residents in the
community.
"Decent housing is essential for a society
to function properly," stated the Governor
General. "We admire Costa Rica's commitment
to providing housing that is accessible to
citizens, as reflected in the work of the
foundation. This is a genuine success story
of our bilateral co-operation."
The Fundación Costa Rica-Canada was created
in 1998, when a rural housing program,
funded through a $10 million contribution
from the Canadian International Development
Agency, was transformed into a foundation
dedicated to the country's rural
development.
The foundation has kept its commitment from
the outset by funding the construction of
houses for low-income Costa Ricans.
Thanks to the program, over 35 000 families
and some 200 000 Costa Ricans have benefited
from sustainable housing since 1988.
During the GG's official visit, Michaelle
Jean spoke to the Costa Rican legislative
assembly, highligthing the strong and varied
relations anchored by the Canada-Costa Rica
Free Trade Agreement.
"We are delighted to have a partner like
Costa Rica and to work tirelessly together
in the hope of guiding the stable and
peaceful development of this continent,
which we share from north to south," said
the Governor General.
