Tool Booth May Be Eliminated, Transport
Minister Suggests
The toll booth on the "Carretera a Caldera"
(San José - Caldera highway) at Piedades de
Santa Ana is all set to start collecting.
But, a move by the Ministerio de Obras
Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) could
eliminate the tolls.
At least that is the word from the ministro
de Transportes, Marco Vargas, who is
responding to concerns of area residents who
have been vocal in their objection of the
¢160 toll for light vehicles and
motorcycles.
Vargas told La Nación that "it (the tolls)
appear unnecessary, but it has to be
evaluated", explaining that the subject is
being discussed by the Consejo Nacional de
Concesiones which is responsible to oversee
the concession contract with Autopistas del
Sol.
The 77 kilometre road from the Sabana park
to the docks at Caldera will be complete by
March 2010 and will have a total of four
toll booths.
The San José - Santa Ana and the Orotina -
Caldera portions of the highway were
completed earlier this year, the part in
between was scheduled to open by June,
though work is progressing ahead of
schedule.
Currently the Pozón and Escazú toll booths
are operating, charging ¢480 and ¢320,
respectively, which increases expected next
month. The other two would be at Piedades
(also called Cuidad Colón) and La Guacima.
