El Salvador Arrests 60 alleged Gang Members
SAN SALVADOR - At least 60 alleged
members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang (MS) in
El Salvador were arrested by the National
Civil Police, reported a communiqué from the
public security entity.
The Elite Division against the Organized
Crime (DECO) began the operation last
Tuesday in Santa Tecla and Colon cities, in
the Liberty department.
The alleged MS members were arrested there
accused of committing 24 homicides last
years, stressed the communiqué.
DECO has arrested 674 people accused of
serious crimes, among them homicides,
extortion and kidnapping.
The MS is one of the largest and most
violent gangs that have killed hundreds
every year in the Central American nations.
El Salvador, one of the countries more
affected by gangs is facing a wave of
violence which death toll exceeded the
levels that the World Health organization
considers enough to declare an epidemic.
