Chilean Election Countdown
SANTIAGO - Any electoral propaganda activity
must end as of Thursday night, when a
72-hour countdown for Chilean general
elections on Sunday will start.
Also as of Thursday night, any public
protest will be banned, with Armed Forces
and Carabineros (Police) assuming public
order protection, in line with Electoral
Service (SERVEL) standards.
Therefore, today is the day for all four
candidates to close their respective
campaigns after intensive in situ activity,
including appearances in the media and
flooding cities and rural areas with
posters.
Presidential hopefuls vying to succeed
Michelle Bachelet on March 10 include
Eduardo Frei, from the ruling party, right
wing Sebastian Pinera, independent Marco
Enriquez-Ominami and left wing Jorge Arrate.
Chileans are also called to elect senators
in nine electoral districts and deputies in
the country's 60 electoral districts.
Results, or at least voting trends, are
expected to be made public on Sunday, with
the Assessment Electoral Court scheduled to
meet on Wednesday 16 for general vote
counting and for solving claims and making
rectifications, if needed. The official
announcement of preliminary results is
expected to be made by SERVEL on Saturday
19.
If, as it is expected, no candidate achieves
50 percent plus one vote, a second round
involving the two most voted is supposed to
be held on Sunday, January 17.
