Special UN Rapporteur in Colombia
BOGOTA - Special
UN Rapporteur for Judiciary Independence
Gabriela Carina Knaul de Albuquerque is
visiting Colombia Saturday and Sunday,
responding to an invitation by the
government.
During her stay in this country, the
rapporteur will check independence of
judges, attorneys and lawyers, as well as
people's access to the judicial system.
Also on the list is to examine respect to
guarantees of the due process and make
recommendations aimed at seeking ways to
foster independence and effectiveness of the
Colombian judiciary system.
Knaul de Albuquerque's agenda includes
meeting with high-level governmental
officials, judges from different courts,
representatives of the Nation General
Attorney's office, and ombudsman's office,
among other entities, in Bogota, Medellin,
Calli and Bucaramanga.
The visit of the special rapporteur
coincides with a strong and prolonged
confrontation between the Colombian
executive and judiciary power.
According to political analysts consulted by
Prensa Latina, the clash between both powers
threaten the State's institutionality, in
case of not being a formula to end the
conflict, termed by some local media of
unusual.
