Guatemala President Reaffirms Social Commitment

GUATEMALA - President Alvaro Colom confirmed his commitment of struggling to increase the benefits for the most needed Guatemalans on Wednesday despite the failure of the budget proposal for 2010 in the Congress.

The guarantee to keep fighting in order to continue the social programs of his administration was the essence of the leaderâÖs message.

The State should function with the same budget of the annual current period because of the denial of the 2010 budget and it is considered as left short of funds by authorities and with other dangers.

Colom pointed that "there would be less resources for investment because less income sources are planned and there would be less resources for the functioning of the public services."

This would also jeopardize labor stability of public workers as teachers, doctors, nurses and policemen, he added.

Nevertheless, he reiterated his commitment "of never giving in regarding his work with the poorest and most needed."

"The prompt and responsible approval of the fiscal reform presented by the government to the Congress is more needed now than ever", said the leader in an appeal to the deputies.

The President called for the "unity of the country, responsibility, solidarity and the work for the welfare of the nation, because only in that way Guatemala can move on."
