OAS Tries to Restore Order in Honduras
Tegucigalpa - Almost two months after the military coup ,
a mission of the Organization of American
States arrived today in Honduras with the
hope of achieving the return of the
institutional order, but little
probabilities of reaching its objectives.
The delegation formed by the secretary
general of OAS, Jose Miguel Insulza and
seven foreign ministers, arrived today at
the Toncontin airport in a plane of the US
Marine.
The purpose of the mission is making the de
facto regime of Roberto Micheletti accepts
the San Jose Agreement, proposed by Costa
Rican president Oscar Arias for solving the
crisis.
That proposal, supported by Washington, sets
the return of president Manuel Zelaya,
although it contains several conditions
rejected by the anti-coupist resistance,
like that of granting amnesty to repressors
and the formation of a conciliation
government.
However, previous to the arrival of the
delegation, the Foreign Minister of the de
facto government, Carlos Lopez, sharply
rejected the return of Zelaya, discarding
any possibiliuty of a negotiated way out of
the crisis.
The misión will meet here with the group
which participated in Costa Rica in the
mediation process, as well as with the
Supreme Court of Justice, the Congress and
the Prosecution, instances that supported
the coup.
It will also interview civil society
organizations opposed to the coup,
presidential candidates, businesspeople,
workers and members of the Catholic and
Evangelist Churches.
For the deputy of the Partido de Unificacion
Democratica Marvin Ponce, the mission of FMs
is one of the last diplomatic attempts to
achieve the Micheletti regime steps down
from power.
Besides Insulza, the misión is formed by the
Foreign Ministers of Argentina, Canada,
Costa Rica, Jamaica, Panama, Mexico and the
Dominican Republic.
Previous to the arrival of the foreign
ministers, TV channel 36 and Radio Globo,
possed to the dictatorship, suffered attacks
that interrumpted their transmissions. |
