Spain
Provides Aid For Panama To Fight
Street Crimes
Panama - The Spanish
government has agreed to grant 4 million
U.S. dollars to help fighting violent street
crimes in Panama, a Spanish official said
here on Wednesday.
Spain will offer help to Panama's security
establishment to build institutional
capacity in criminal investigation, Cristina
Deleito, coordinator of the Spanish Agency
for International Cooperation, said at the
agreement signing ceremony.
Criminal violence, violence and
discrimination against women were obstacles
to the building of a culture of peace, she
added.
"The security situation in Panama has not
reached a critical stage, but it does demand
the establishment of new initiatives that
support government efforts to brake
violence," said Jose Eguren, head of the UN
System in Panama.
The Panamians are enjoying less and less
social peace though the country's crime rate
is not as high as other nations' in the
region, said Alberto Vallarino, Panama's
minister of economy and finance.
The criminal homicides rose to 19 for every
100,000 residents last year, according to
Panama's National Comprehensive Criminal
Statistics System.
