Venezuela Cuts Subsidized Fuel to Colombia
Caracas - Venezuelan sources at the border with
Colombia reported on Tuesday compliance with
the regulation of suspending exports of
subsidized fuel to that country, while the
authorities announced measures to avoid an
increase in smuggling.
The suspension was ordered by President Hugo
Chavez,a s a response to the Colombian
authorization to establish seven US military
bases in that nation, an action considered
as a threat to Venezuela.
La Nacion, a daily of Tachira state,
reported that eight tank trucks were stopped
on Monday at the Francisco de Paula
Santander, with 73,970 gallons of fuel, part
of the 2,113,435 gallons of subsidized fuel
sent to Colombia monthly.
That export was the result of an agreement
between Chavez and Colombian President
Alvaro Uribe to benefit the Colombia people
at the border with Venezuela, in Santander's
Norte department.
Faced with the tension that the restriction
could cause, Interior and Justice Minister
Tareck El Aissami asserted that they would
fight smuggling to guarantee fuel or any
natural resource to the population, in
compliance with the policy of safeguarding
national sovereignty. |
