Tomato Wars In Sarchí

Sarchí was at war this weekend, in the first of two weekend encounters, in the traditional "tometazo" that is held every year, in a war where there are no losers nor any winners.

This year, some 700 people gathered at the Eliécer Pérez Conejo de Sarchí Norte stadium to through at each other some 4.000 kilos of tomatoes.

Emilio Arce, president and organizer of the Feria Nacional del Tomate that kicked off on Friday said the event was a total success.

The annual event also includes a lot of traditional activities and foods, ending in the tometazo.

Arce assures that all the tomatoes used in the event are not fit for human consumption.

The second tomato war will on Sunday.
